چکیده

Does Education Reduce Wage Inequality? Quantile Regressions Evidence from Fifteen European Countries We address the impact of education upon wage inequality by drawing on evidence from fifteen European countries, during a period ranging between 1980 and 1995. We focus on within-educational-levels wage inequality by estimating quantile regressions of Mincer equations and analysing the differences in returns to education across the wage distribution and across time. Four different patterns emerge: 1) a positive and increasing contribution of education upon within-levels wage inequality –the case of Portugal; 2) a positive but stable role of education in terms of inequality – Austria, Finland, France, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK; 3) a neutral role – Denmark and Italy; and 4) a negative impact – Germany and Greece. We thus find that in most countries dispersion in earnings increases with educational levels and that education is a risky investment. These results suggest a positive interaction between schooling and ability with respect to earnings. JEL Classification: C29, D31, I21, J24, J31

Understanding Urban Wage Inequality in China 1988-2008: Evidence from Quantile Analysis

Understanding Urban Wage Inequality in China 1988-2008: Evidence from Quantile Analysis This paper examines change in wage gaps in urban China by estimating quantile regressions on CHIPS data. It applies the Machado and Mata (2005) decomposition, finding sharp increases in inequality from 1988 to 1995 and from 2002 to 2008 largely due to changes in the wage structure. The analysis reports how t...

Educational Qualifications and Wage Inequality: Evidence for Europe

Educational Qualifications and Wage Inequality: Evidence for Europe This paper explores the connection between education and wage inequality in nine European countries. We exploit the quantile regression technique to calculate returns to lower secondary, upper secondary and tertiary education at different points of the wage distribution. We find that returns to tertiary education are highly inc...

Wage Dispersion, Markets and Institutions: The Effects of the Boom in Education on the Wage Structure

Wage Dispersion, Markets and Institutions: The Effects of the Boom in Education on the Wage Structure In this paper, we investigate the effects of the boom in education on the wage structure in Europe. We use detailed information on the distribution of wages, estimated from microdata from 12 European countries from the beginning of the 1980’s to the present, to analyse the changes both between ...

Changes in Wage Structure in Urban India 1983-2004: A Quantile Regression Decomposition This paper examines changes in the wage structure in urban India during the past two decades (1983-2004) across the entire wage distribution using the Machado and Mata (2005) decomposition approach. Real wages increased throughout the wage distribution during 1983-1993; however, it increased only in the uppe...

Polarization and Rising Wage Inequality: Comparing the U.S. and Germany

This paper compares trends in wage inequality in the U.S. and Germany using an approach developed by MaCurdy and Mroz (1995) to separate age, time, and cohort effects. Between 1979 and 2004, wage inequality increased strongly in both the U.S. and Germany but there were various country specific aspects of this increase. For the U.S., we find faster wage growth since the 1990s at the top (80% qua...
